At some point our aging loved ones may not be completely able care for themselves. If that time comes a whole array of issues need to be addressed. Everyone must be on the same page. Even though it’s your parent, you can’t possibly be there twenty-four hours a day. You need help. Will your partner help you? Typically, better halves already have enough to do. They don’t want the extra burden of caring for someone else. When people reach the point when they aren’t able to live by themselves, their routine needs translate into a lot of work for their “adoptive” caregivers. Cooking, cleaning, medications, personal hygiene and additional expenses can be more than some families can handle.

Be proactive. Long before your mom and dad reach old age, have frank discussions about what they expect and how these expectations will be met. They might just assume that their children will take care of them when the time comes, regardless of what the circumstances may be. It could be a shock to learn that alternatives might need to be considered.
